Global Poker Index (GPI) has updated its 2014 Player of the Year standings, and some popular names are still in the hunt. Dan Smith currently leads the way and is certainly the favorite to claim the title. However, there are some other big names that won’t go down without a fight. Scott Seiver (3rd), Jason Mercier (5th), and Daniel Negreanu (13th) are still mathematically alive.

Dan Smith the Best Player You Probably Don’t Know

dan smith

Dan Smith resides in Canada and hails from New Jersey. Not only is Dan currently first in the 2014 GPI POY standings, he’s also GPI’s top overall ranked poker player. Smith has earned more than $8,000,000 in his tournament career, with his biggest win coming in the 2014 Bellagio Super High Roller Tournament in Las Vegas ($2,044,766).

Smith also won a WPT event in 2013, earning more than $1 million for his efforts. He’s a talented poker player that has proven he can dominate live and online poker games. He excels at tournaments but also can hold his own in high stakes cash games. Smith doesn’t have the worldwide appeal of players such as Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth, but the numbers speak for themselves – he’s every bit as talented.

Jason Mercier Could Be a Threat to Smith’s Title Chase

Jason Mercier is a premier poker player – online and offline. Mathematically, it will take an amazing run the rest of the year to overtake Dan Smith for the 2014 GPI POY title, but don’t count him out. Mercier is a threat to win any poker tournament, against any competition. He’s one of the most popular poker players in the world, and also one of the best.
